Today, I’m in my garage with my 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk to update you on some unexpected issues I’ve encountered over the past month and how I resolved them. Additionally, I’ll walk you through a maintenance install, so stay tuned!
Issue 1: Rear Differential Leak
Identifying the Problem
Recently, I noticed a leak on my garage floor and discovered that the rear differential on my Jeep Cherokee was leaking. Specifically, the driver-side axle seal was the culprit.
Resolution
The good news is that this issue was covered under the powertrain warranty. The dealership replaced the leaking seal with a brand new unit and provided a loaner vehicle while they completed the work. If you own a Jeep Cherokee, I highly recommend checking for leaks before your warranty expires to avoid out-of-pocket costs.
Issue 2: “Stop/Start Not Ready” Warning
Identifying the Problem
While my Jeep was at the dealer for the rear differential repair, I also had them test the battery. This was due to the persistent “Stop/Start Not Ready” warning on my dash. The test revealed that my battery had failed after less than three years and around 44,000 miles.
Understanding the Battery
For vehicles equipped with a start/stop system, like my Jeep, a special type of battery known as a glass mat battery is required. These batteries are more expensive, and the dealer quoted over $300 for a replacement.
Solution: Replacing the Battery
Fortunately, my friends at Bosch sent me a replacement battery from their top-of-the-line Platinum Series, which is compatible with the start/stop system. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how I replaced the battery:
Step 1: Locate the Battery
In the Jeep Cherokee, the battery is conveniently located on the side of the engine in the front. Unlike some vehicles where the battery is under the front seat or in the trunk, this placement makes access much easier.
Step 2: Gather Tools
You will need a 10-millimeter socket to remove the mounting bolt and the terminals.
Step 3: Remove the Battery
- Remove the Mounting Bolt: Use the 10-millimeter socket to remove the bolt holding the battery down.
- Disconnect the Terminals: Start with the negative terminal, followed by the positive terminal. Use the 10-millimeter socket for both.
- Remove the Old Battery: Carefully lift the battery out of the vehicle.
Step 4: Install the New Battery
- Place the New Battery: Lower the new Bosch battery into the battery compartment.
- Secure the Battery: Reattach the mounting bracket to hold the battery in place.
- Reconnect the Terminals: Connect the positive terminal first, followed by the negative terminal.
- Replace the Cover: Put the protective cover back on.
Step 5: Check the System
After installing the new battery, start the vehicle. You should notice that the “Stop/Start Not Ready” warning has cleared. Drive for a few miles to ensure the battery is fully recognized by the vehicle’s system.
Additional Notes
- Presets and Settings: Fortunately, I did not lose my radio presets or any other settings during the battery replacement process.
- Battery Specifications: The new Bosch battery has 800 cold-cranking amps, compared to the 700 cold-cranking amps of the factory battery. This should provide better performance and longevity.
Final Thoughts
Replacing the battery resolved the “Stop/Start Not Ready” warning on my Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. While the start/stop feature isn’t my favorite, it’s essential to ensure that all systems in your vehicle are functioning correctly.
